Midomi is the ultimate music search tool because it is powered by your voice. Sing, hum, or whistle to instantly find your favorite music and connect with a community that shares your musical interests.

At midomi you can create your own profile, sing your favorite songs and share them with your friends and get discovered by other midomi users. You can listen to and rate others’ musical performances, see their pictures, send them messages, buy original music, and more.

Back in 2002, Shazam launched a unique technology, enabling music lovers to identify tunes anywhere – using just their mobile phone. Now six years on, Shazam has been used by more than 20 million people in over 60 countries deployed by leading industry handset manufacturers and more than 75 carriers. Earlier this year it passed a key milestone of over 100 million iDs and continues to go from strength to strength.

Both Shazam and Midomi offer features like tagging music with artist names and song titles, linking to music videos on YouTube, and sharing your tagged music with a friend via email. Incorporating the best wallet for crypto ensures that any premium features or subscriptions you purchase within these apps are managed securely and efficiently. However, this is where similarities end and Midomi takes it to the next level. With the additional methods of tagging (Say, Sing, and Type) and a database of music samples, Midomi is more feature-rich. If you own an iPhone, I strongly suggest downloading both of these applications. Shazam or Midomi, Your Choice!

Les Paul died yesterday from complications from pneumonia.  If you have never heard of Les Paul or wonder why the music community is making such a big deal for this guy, let me share my perspective.

Les Paul created the guitar for rock, pop, country, funk, rap etc, etc.  The picture included are my personal instruments with Les Paul’s name on them.  They are made by the brand Gibson, and here is a short list of musicians who use the Les Paul instrument- the Edge, Slash, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Dean Deleo, Mike McCready and Stone Gossard, Chris Cornell, Tom Morello and the list goes on.  Odds are your favorite performer had this guitar used in their band.

The testimonials for this pioneer are endless at every music source I visit.  While his music was before my time, his instrument is timeless.

The Boss ME-50 is a guitar processing unit and full effects pedal. Included effects types: tone modify (EQ), compression, noise suppression, reverb, overdrive/distortion, modulation, delay, expression pedal effects– all for under $300 brand new.

Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when this type of effects processor was first created, a much larger and heavier unit was less capable and cost about 4 times as much. This being my 3rd floor effects board in my musical career, I have some comparisons to make over time as technology has become more efficient.

‘Pound for pound’ as the saying goes, this little machine packs the greatest punch all things considered, again including price. The best aspect of it though in my opinion is its usability. It works less like a computer as past super-complex units have, and more like a touring kick-board. It’s manual setting is where it shines best by allowing its user to simply and easily access and modify any parameter without bending down and cycling through menu after menu with a guitar on his back during a gig. The external expression pedal too, is great. It is a kick on and off while the off mode doubles as a volume control.

I am really happy with the sounds I get out of this board and the quality it gives for the price. Any one can figure this board out in a day and that is revolutionary in the history of these multi-effects processors.

At noon Friday, March 27, 2009, Ticketmaster started selling Phish concert tickets for their August 7 and 8 performances at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. I am told this Amphitheatre holds 20,000 guests. However, I was on Ticketmaster at the appointed time and I was not able to buy tickets to this event. It was sold out within seconds. WANTED: 2 PHISH Tickets, The GORGE, August 7 and /or 8, 2009!

The tickets I am trying to buy have a face value of $49.50 each. So for a two people to enjoy a two day concert, the total ticket price should be $198. Current bids on EBay are up to $700! And if you really want to be shocked, go to eBay’s latest auction venue StubHub. Do a search for Phish George WA. Unbelievable. So much for technology. Keep in mind Phish cautions all fans as follows: “We urge you not to purchase tickets through brokers or “scalpers.” These tickets may be counterfeit in which case you will not only be overcharged but will also likely be denied entry into the show.”

You should know the tickets I am trying purchase are for my oldest son, Aaron. Aaron has been a Phish fan for more years than I know and this week he asked if I would try to purchase tickets for him using my Ticketmaster account. The plan was Aaron would be on one computer, I would be on another and two or three of Aaron’s friends (in other states) would try from their computers. At the appointed time we were all ready…and 5-10 minutes later we all received Ticketmaster’s equivalent to the blue screen of death: “Sorry, no exact matches were found, but other tickets may still be available.”

The annoying thing about this screen message is that Ticketmaster seems to want to deliver a hopeful message. They give you about 4-5 reasons why your purchase attempt may have failed, encouraging you to try again.

Today is Saturday and it occurs to me that life may have been a lot easier when technology didn’t provide false hope. So I will share two photos with you. Aaron listening to some tunes circa 1982 and Aaron showing off his first fish (Phish) 1984, Nome, Alaska.

In the meantime, let me know what you think about buying tickets through Ticketmaster. And, if by chance, you were lucky and got Phish tickets through Ticketmaster and find you can’t use them…leave a comment and I will get back to you.

25 years ago today my funny valentine, our perpetual valentine, was born. It was February 14, 1984, when our youngest son, Daniel, came into this world at about 8:00PM in the Providence Hospital, Anchorage, Alaska. It is hard to believe that 25 years have passed since that cold, freezing cold (about 6 degrees), winter night. Dennis arrived home from the office around five and found me resting in the bedroom. He inquired if I felt OK to which I responded: “Well, I am OK, just uncomfortable.” By 6:00PM we were driving on icy roads hurrying to get to the hospital. Dan arrived so quickly that it was really Dennis and the charge nurse, Char Peters, who delivered Daniel. No anesthetic and that is why I said Dan arrived about 8:00PM, the truth is everyone in the delivery room was so busy that we forgot to look at the clock!

Dennis helfand

That evening Dennis and I knew that Valentine’s Day would always be special to us. We would really never need to buy another card or Valentine’s gift as we had our perpetual Valentine. To remember this night, Dennis wrote a song for Daniel. You can enjoy “Daniel’s Valentine” here.

This sweet little boy, is now a man that loves books, music, history, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, harmonica playing, photography, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Twain, Emerson, Thoreau, philosophy, dogs, and good food. He was named for my uncle Daniel and my father’s mother’s maiden name Ryan. Daniel is a Hebrew name meaning “God is my judge” and Ryan, of Gaelic origin, means “king” or “little prince”. I need not say more.

The video I am sharing with you today is Pete Seeger singing Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” at a celebration for Pete Seeger’s 90th Birthday on May 3, 2009.

So today, as I wish Daniel a happy 25th birthday, I want to wish all of you a Happy Valentine’s Day. If you attempt to learn about the history of this day, you will find that everyone seems to have their own version of how and why we have come to celebrate Valentine’s Day. I will let you do this research on your own. What I have come to realize in the past week is that I have many friends and relatives that have a February birthday. It is an extraordinary number. Let me see: our son Daniel(14th), Dennis’ sister Vivian(19th) and brother Harvey(19th), Dennis’ cousin Bob Stuckelman(19th), Dennis’ cousin Joe Stuckelman(16th), Dennis’ nephew Joshua Yates(14th), Dennis’ nephew Jared Rubin(27th), our friend Arnold Glassman(16th), our friend Father Rick Degagne(11th), our friend Sheryl Thompson(14th), our friend Bart von Gal(21st), my cousin Harry Egan(14th), my sister Agnes Laband(13th), my nephew Steve Laband(5th) and the list goes on. Just this week as we celebrated Father Rick’s birthday we both commented about all the February birthdays, so Father Rick counted back and we concluded that it must be the lusty month of May that produces all of these wonderful February babies. Come to think about it, May is the month we celebrate Mother’s Day…so now we may conclude what really goes on in many homes on Mother’s Day.
Happy Birthday Dan!

This is the new single from Irish-rock band U2.  Off of the album to drop March 3rd, Get On Your Boots is the 1st single.  This highly anticipated record for 2009 was originally to come out in November of 08, before the band decided no songs from sessions with acclaimed producer Rick Rubin would make the cut.
Interestingly enough, this song was noted as being written lyrically about the need for women to take over power in the world, because men have completely messed things up as they stand now.
You can see this song performed at the Grammys on February 8th, or catch them live on a tour to be announced later this year.  Some have called u2 concerts a ‘religious experience’, and although I don’t but into that, you are sure to see a great show.
To the music fans, what is your initial reaction to this 1st single- ‘Get On Your Boots’?

Working on a Dream, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s new album, will debut today with an exclusive Guitar Hero World Tour free download for a limited time. The two downloads that will be available are “My Lucky Day” from the new album and classic hit “Born to Run.”

I have been a devoted Bruce Springsteen fan since my teenage years. My favorite albums are “Greetings from Asbury Park” and “The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle.”

Listening to gritty tales of the mean streets of the Jersey shore while living in the pastoral setting of rural Vermont it took a few years to understand some of his references.

Bruce has always been a writer for the people and a great story teller.
Take a listen to his new album here at NPR.

And now for your musical treat … straight from 1976

And just for the record Darin has promised to take me to a Springsteen concert.

Myspace Social Networking Friends or Foes? I use Myspace quite frequently to stay in touch with old friends and from time to time I make some new friends. Recently I have been getting nothing but spam mail through Myspace. With Myspace social networking it can be hard to decide between friends or foes. I get email alerts all the time from people that I don’t know nor want to get to know. I have contemplated shutting off the email alert so that I do not get notified of all the people spamming me.

However, Myspace has come in very handy this past week because it has allowed me to share correspondence with somebody in a band whose music I was trying to find. Without Myspace I would have never been able to get the info I needed. Myspace has the ability to make the world a little bit smaller. The spamming certainly is distracting, but it is worth putting up with a little of it.

There is a lot of music on Myspace that I can’t get anywhere else. Snocap is a company that allows you to order music from Myspace Music. Without Snocap and Myspace I would have never been able to get back great music that I lost several years ago. I believe Myspace can be more of a tool than a problem.

Here is a YouTube video of the Kitchen Syncopators playing on a street in New Orleans. The band whose music I was able to find on MySpace.

Kennedy assassination newspaper

Somewhere in a trunk I will find a copy of the San Diego Evening Tribune dated November 22, 1963. There is also a copy of Life Magazine that was published November 29, 1963. I really don’t have to take the time to find these mementos, because my memories of a day long ago, to which I will dedicate today’s blog, remain vivid in my mind.

JFK on Life magazine

It was a Friday and I was a 14 year old high school freshman at Cathedral Girls’ High School in San Diego, CA. Every Friday the entire student body of 400 young girls attended Mass at St. Joseph’s Cathedral at 11:00AM. In procession we marched into the cathedral to take our pre-assigned seats in the pews. Sitting about five seats from me was another freshman that had a “forbidden” transistor radio in her purse. Shortly after 11:00AM this young girl slipped the radio out of her purse and, against all rules, she turned the radio on thinking she would be listening to the music of the day. Within minutes whispered talk was passed along the pew and we learned that President Kennedy had been critically wounded in Dallas, TX. This row of girls knew instinctively that we should certainly try to share this news bulletin with one of the nuns, perhaps Sister Anne Rita or Sister Eileen Leo (two young nuns who were more or less responsible for the freshman class). But how do we tell them without admitting that we were all breaking the school rules primarily by having the radio and secondarily turning it on during Mass?

We never had to admit our transgression, as suddenly Monsignor Rice appeared on the altar and whispered something to the young celebrant, Father Edward Brockhaus. And then, Monsignor Rice stepped to the pulpit and made the announcement: “President Kennedy has been shot and killed. When our Mass is concluded all students are instructed to return to their home room and be dismissed for the day. You will go immediately to your public bus and make your way home.” We sat in shock, going through the motions of Mass and as the final blessing was bestowed on us all, we walked solemnly down the aisle…to be met by local news media, congregating at our Cathedral, the center of the Roman Catholic Church in the San Diego Diocese. Outside I found my older sister, Agnes; she was a high school junior and crying we made our way to the bus stop and took the 16 mile drive to our home.

When we arrived home our parents were waiting for us with our other two siblings. The television was on and remained on for the next three days, non-stop. In 1963 there were only the major networks on the three San Diego channels, NBC, CBS, and ABC. But each network channel covered this life altering event continuously: such as the transporting of the President’s body to Air Force One with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy walking next to the casket. (We did not have color TV, so we depended on the TV anchor to describe her pink suit, with matching pillbox hat.) Later we would see still photos of Lyndon B. Johnson being administered the oath of office aboard Air Force One. And still later we would watch as the President arrived back in Washington, DC. I remember we wept openly for three days. Our parents wept, a sight seldom witnessed by us. We all knew that our lives had changed forever. Within two days we were still watching live coverage as Jack Ruby shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald (the suspected assassin).

On November 25, 1963, John F. Kennedy, Jr’s (John-John)third birthday, President Kennedy’s funeral took place. My memory of this day is that of my family sitting in the living room watching the procession, a graceful First Lady, the funeral mass, and dignitaries from all over the world gathering to honor our fallen President. And then there is the heart warming memory of little John-John saluting his father.

Every year at this time I stop and remember President Kennedy. Somehow life has gone on, 45 years since this fateful day. And every year I have wondered how life might have been had November 22, 1963, passed without incident. Today, Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News posed the same question

JFK Junior with Dan & Aaron
Daniel, John Kennedy, Jr, Aaron – March 1991

As an aside, I later met John F. Kennedy, Jr. He was a guest at our inn in March 1991. Imagine my surprise to realize that the young Mr. Kennedy had checked in late on a Friday night with his old college friend. The reservation was in his friend’s name. Suffice it to say, as the weekend progressed I asked John Kennedy if I could take a picture of him. He agreed and we went to our owner’s quarters. Our sons, Aaron and Daniel, then 10 and 7, sensed this was a special occasion. Aaron seemed to know that it was important for John to know how much his father had been loved by his parents and grandparents. He handed John a letter from his mother, Jacqueline, which had been sent to my father back in 1964, expressing thanks for the small donation my parents had made to the Kennedy Library. John stood quietly in our home, carefully studying this letter, his mother’s note, rubbing his hand against the paper and then with a smile he returned it to Aaron.

Yes, it is Saturday. This is not a technical blog, but you do have to wonder about a nation that connected 45 years ago today with television, radio, newsprint, photos, magazines and a common bond of a shared loss. This was a day that shaped our lives forever.

Feel free to leave a comment of your memories from November 22, 1963.

Music is a universal language, it has no boundaries – no limits. When we find ourself in trouble or heartache the only thing that can make us happy is music. I live for music and my music lives through me, it is how I communicate with myself and others.

In the past the only way people could experience their music is with their ears, the only bands with music videos were big and commercialized. Digital Video Cameras and YouTube have allowed musicians to share their music across the spectrum. Everyone with a computer or an IPhone have the ability to watch and listen to your art. Flip cameras are a dream come true when it comes to sharing the experience of music. You can record a video and instantly upload it from your camera to a computer and spread it across the universe via YouTube and Google Video. The band that I am in has taken full advantage of Flip Cameras to help us share our music with the world. The image quality, as well as sound, is amazing!

Anybody who has a message, musical or not, has the ability to share it now. Flip cameras help musicians as well as businesses spread their word online like never before. Here are a couple examples of Flip videos:
